Joe didn’t know his parents because he was a tadpole and tadpoles seem to just appear out of nowhere. As far as he knew, he had simply arrived and was swimming around with so many other guys in the same place that it was sometimes hard to move.

“Hey Joe!” they said, bumping into him one after the other. “Hey you!” he would reply, not knowing their names.

“Hey Joe!” they said again, and then again and again!

“I really wish I could get some space!” thought Joe. “What if I was the only tadpole here? It would be so great to wiggle around this amazing place and not bump into anyone else saying ‘Hey Joe!’”

But after a few days, Joe realised that he was only bumping into a few of the same guys he had met before. If he wasn’t careful, he could now also bump into the big lily stems which grew there and hurt his head.

Every morning there were fewer and fewer tadpoles saying “Hey Joe!” He began to worry about where his friends were. He missed them. He really enjoyed doing the loop-the-loop in the top of the water with them where the sun made it so warm and friendly.
